Sandys Celebrates "Game Changer" Thanet High Speed Rail Upgrade
Laura Sandys MP today hailed the announcement of the new high speed rail upgrade as ‘a game changer for Thanet’.
Laura said: “Today’s news that journey times from Ramsgate to London will be reduced to just over 1 hour is the culmination of a great deal of hard work and hammering on doors to secure funding for Thanet.
“This upgrade to our high-speed service is of enormous importance, opening up a whole new range of economic opportunities for our area. Local residents told me that they felt left at the end of the line. We have fought tirelessly to change this and Kent County Council, Sir Roger Gale and I have invested a great deal of time in working hard to secure Government funding. I am absolutely thrilled that with this, journey times are now being reduced which will open doors to more investment and more visitors. This is a huge win for Thanet and will be a real game-changer.”
“I am amazed but not surprised that some wannabe MPs are claiming that a three year process of securing funds for this upgrade were due to them. Obviously they do not know how infrastructure decisions are made and would be no good at making representation on behalf of Thanet in Parliament. Naïve and deluded!”
The rail investment has been funded in a significant part by a portion of the £40 million Regional Growth Fund, which I helped to secure with Kent County Council in October 2011. Network Rail have also been an instrumental part of this process and have helped to finance this scheme.
This funding has delivered extensive economic opportunities for the local area and these opportunities will continue to increase with today’s announcement.
